The Cause of Back Acne and Back Acne Treatment

Back acne can show up in many forms, such as blackheads, pimples, pustules, or as cysts, the most severe form of acne. It is usually more persistent and more difficult to treat than facial acne.

Back acne has no specific target. It afflicts people from ages ten to forty; sometimes even during later years. Nearly everyone in the world has at one point in his or her life experienced back acne.

Most often males suffer from back acne and particularly during puberty, when the production of hormones called androgens is increased. Androgen production stimulates sebaceous glands and causes them to enlarge and overproduce, which lead to clogged skin pores.

So, when the so-called sebaceous glands (or the glands that create the oily substance) produce an excess of this sebum, a lot of linoleic fatty acids is needed. These sebaceous glands are situated just below the surface of the skin. Sebaceous glands continuously produce and secrete oil through the opening (pores) in the skin. When extra amounts of sebum are produced, the body can’t keep up with the production of linoleic acid. The immune system detects the deficiency and reacts as if it is a threat to the body. An army of chemicals is sent to the area to fix what’s wrong, and they signal to the body to start producing more cells to thicken walls of the sebum canals.

The resulting mess of sebum and dead cells plugs the hair follicle and attracts bacterial attack. The bacteria cause the surrounding tissues to become inflamed and acne is formed. In back acne, if the inflammation is right on the surface it is called a pustule. A deeper infection forms a papule. An acne infection that is still deeper in the skin causes cysts, which is the worst form of acne and may lead to permanent scarring. If the extra sebum breaks through the skin it causes a whitehead, and if the head of the plug becomes dark due to the skin pigment melanin, it is called a blackhead. 
 
Contrary to facial acne, back acne is not generally acquired via heredity. No definite cause for back acne has been proven to date, but, just to be on the safe side, try to avoid using irritating detergents and fabric softeners with your clothes, maintain a healthy diet and exercise to sweat out dirt that can otherwise plug your pores. Being cautious about these things can prevent problems from arising. Some believe that back acne is aggravated by wearing tight clothes and constant heat exposure, which doesn’t allow the skin to breathe. It can also be hard to treat back acne, since we are almost always covering this area with clothes. One more thing to mention when talking about back acne is back packs. Heavy back packs put pressure on the upper shoulders/back and can cause irritation. Maybe leaving your backpack at home to see if that might be what causes the problem isn’t a bad idea. 

The skin on our back is thicker than anywhere else in the body; so back acne is more stubborn than facial acne and is more resistant to treatment. Simple back acne problems can be treated using medication sold over the counter. Try a cleanser that contains salicylic or glycolic acid. A light coat of benozyl peroxide with between 2.5% and 5% concentration may also help address back acne problems.
