Avoid Stretch Marks by Preventing them from Forming in the First Place

by Jen Hopkins

Almost all women hate having any type of blemish on their skin, this includes all types of scars and stretch marks. While scars can be prevented by avoiding situations that may expose you to potentially harmful circumstances, stretch marks are harder to prevent as they occur as a natural byproduct of the body's physiology.

One of the earliest times when these marks are prone to forming is during puberty. This is because the body rapidly increases in size while the skin is unable to stretch and grow fast enough to keep up with the body. Other times in life when tearing of the skin may also occur is during pregnancy, or as a result of a rapid increase in weight that may be due to excessive eating.

Generally, women are more prone to obtaining these marks as they are exposed to a lot of changes in their bodies especially when they get pregnant. Their bodies grow very fast to accommodate the growing baby within them. In addition to this, the increased levels of hormones during different times of their life also make them more prone to the development of stretch marks.

But men can also develop these marks. Although men do not get pregnant so they wouldn't have to undergo drastic changes in their bodies, and they are also subjected to fewer variations in their hormone levels, there are still other situations as to when they can develop these scars. Aside from excessive eating and increase in weight, body building which leads to sudden increase in mass can also lead to extreme stretching of the skin.

As with all problems, situations and sicknesses, it is always better to prevent them from happening in the first place. Unfortunately, this is a different case as it is very hard to prevent the formation of stretch marks. Most people would not be conscious about their bodies during puberty thus marks formed at this time in life are rather unavoidable.

As for instances that you have control, you can use home remedies such as cocoa butter to help moisturize the skin and prevent it from tearing easily. When expecting a baby, women can apply creams and vitamins which can help increase the skin's elasticity so that tearing can be prevented. Other causes can also be controlled such as excessive eating and body building. One can slow down their increase in size by controlling the amount of food that they eat, and the weight that they are carrying so that the body will not grow in size too fast for the skin to cope with.

As for existing marks, there are a lot of ways as to how to eliminate them. The most expensive treatments such as laser and microdermabrasion are usually the most effective. But other methods can also be tried such as home remedies and scar removal creams wherein the color and texture of these scars can be lightened so that they appear to be invisible.

Preventing stretch marks from forming is always the better way to go so that you won't have to deal with them. But for unavoidable cases, there are also many procedures and techniques that you can try to get rid of these blemishes on your skin.
